Diacetyl is a chemical largely used in the flavour manufacturing industry to simulate a "buttery" or "creamy" taste. Diacetyl is part of a group of chemicals called Diketones. This group of chemicals also includes Acetoin and Acetyl Propionyl. Under certain conditions, Acetoin and Acetyl Propionyl can form trace amounts of Diacetyl.
There has been a massive boom of vapers talking about Diacetyl in eliquid and it's potential harm over the last few years - rightfully so. We should absolutely be concerned about what exactly we are inhaling. The fear around diacetyl comes from a case in the 1990’s where a group of workers in a microwave popcorn factory contracted Bronchiolitis (AKA 'popcorn lung'). The workers inhaled large amounts of Diacetyl (used in the butter flavour) in very high concentration in a powdered form. It is generally accepted that the Diacetyl was the cause of the disease.
The fear surrounding Diacetyl is not unwarranted. However, the circumstances between modern day vaping and the popcorn factory incident are vastly different. Vapers are not pumping their lungs full of powdered Diacetyl at an astounding rate. Thankfully, many new studies have surfaced indicating that the levels of Diacetyl in ejuice are 10 to 100 times less than the levels found in cigarettes.
This is where DIY vapers can now weigh out the pros and cons of vaping products containing Diacetyl. If you decide that you'd rather avoid Diacetyl, you can absolutely do that. As a DIY mixer, YOU control what you are putting into your ejuice and ultimately your body. Here at Paragon we are diligent about informing our customers of the Diketone levels in the flavourings that we sell. If a product is listed on our site that contains Diketones, it is listed in the product description. If you'd like to avoid Diketones, the majority of Flavor West's flavourings are Diketone free, The Flavor Apprentice DX line is Diketone free, and Capella's V2 line is Diketone free.
